: the colour of blood, the ruby and strawberries :

RED

The colour seems to have taken over The Hovel Shop rails this week.

Here are some interesting facts about the colour Red

:

1. Red is the highest arc of the rainbow.

2. Red is the first colour you lose sight of at Twilight.

3. The longest wavelength of light is Red.

4. Eric the Red is the Viking credited for colonising Greenland…he earned his nickname from his bright red hair and beard.

5. Bees can’t see the colour Red, but they can see all other bright colours. Red flowers are usually pollinated by birds, butterflies, bats and wind, rather than bees.

: it’s hip to be square (how to crochet like a jailbird) :

I visited Kilmainham Jail in Dublin last November and in the museum I spied this beautiful crocheted blouse on display. It was made by a 17 year old inmate many moons ago. I took some pictures and worked out the pattern at home. I made my own version of the top, which you can see here…

You can see when the squares are joined together they create this star/flower pattern which is pretty cool. Could be used to make a blanket, jumper, scarf, placemat….etc. Have a go experimenting yourself over the winter months!

: THE KILMAINHAM SQUARE :

you will need, yarn- 2 colours, crochet hook, scissors, darning needle, some patience (see bottom for abbreviations)

ch 5, ss in last ch to make a circle

ch 1, place a contrasting colour yarn as a marker here, dc 15 in the loop, join with ss at the yarn marker

ch 4, skip 1st dc from previous row, 1 tr into next dc from previous row, (ch 1, skip next dc, 1 tr into next dc) repeat until you reach the first treble and join with ss

ch 6, (tr into same ch space, ch 3, skip next ch space, tr into next ch space, ch 3) repeat until you meet the 6ch from the beginning, and join with ss in 3rd ch

ch 3, <(tr into each of next 3 ch, tr into next tr) repeat () twice more, ch 7, sk next ch space, tr into next tr from previous row>, repeat <> 3 more times and join with ss when you meet the beginning

: COME TOGETHER :

Here is how to stitch them together, pop a border round and embellish the middle if you so wish :

find the middle ch of each loop from 4 squares and with a darning needle and a little of the yarn, hook them all on then tie together at the back

the middle five trebles should be joined together with some yarn also at each side

to crochet a border in the same colour yarn, join the yarn at one of the middle trebles from the edge, ch 1, then place a contrasting yarn marker there, 1 dc into every tr, at the corner ch spaces dc 8, and at the double ch spaces, ch 4 in each ch space, ss to join when you reach your yarn marker

i switched yarn colour and joined again above a set of trebles, ch 1 then use the white yarn to make a marker, then 1 dc into every dc from previous row

i embellished the middle flower by joining the brown yarn, ch 1, place a white yarn marker, then dc into every ch and dc : I only embellished the four large petals, join with ss where white marker is

and voila dudes…!

abbreviations :

ch – chain    sp – space    ss – slipstitch    dc – double crochet    tr – treble

: burning cushions, buying vinyl :

THIS LAST WEEK I HAVE MAINLY BEEN MOVING HOUSE, UNPACKING, SEEING MARTHA REEVES AND THE VANDELLAS FOR FREE AT HULL FREEDOM FESTIVAL, BUYING RECORDS, MEETING MY FRIENDS LOVELY PARENTS, CATCHING UP WITH MY MUM, GOING TO DANCE LESSONS AT THE WORKING MEN’S CLUB, LEARNING GUITAR AT NIGHTSCHOOL AND SORTING SOME AMAZING CLOTHES FOR THE HOVEL SHOP.

I tried to make some cushion covers to replace these purple things for my new bedroom :

: I crocheted these squares a while ago after visiting Kilmainham Jail and Museum in Dublin. They had a crocheted blouse on display there, made by a 17year old girl who had stayed at the prison. I took a couple of pictures through the glass, then figured out the pattern when I got home. It’s made up of lots of these squares, then a simple double crochet border joins the neckline, sleeves and hem :

: Click on this link-  it’s hip to be square : how to crochet like a jailbird–  it will take you to my post on how to crochet these squares. Or you can put whatever you want in their place, there are always little gems of embroidered cloth in charity shops which would work really well. To the right are pics of my version of the Kilmainham Blouse :

: CUSHIONS :

You will need : Sewing Machine, White Cotton Thread, Sewing Pins, Fabric, Cushion Inners, Scissors, Tape Measure, Crocheted Square Piece, Original Cushion Cover (to take measurements from).

This is what I did (In Pictures)

In the end, I decided I really hated how they turned out. I think I’ve overdosed on chintz over the past couple of years and it all just felt a bit too floral. I’ve been feeling more of the dark side the past few days so I decided to burn the cushion covers, stick with the purple ones and wait until I know what my taste is again.

The way you smell after a bonfire is one of my favourites.
